Ten minutes from most of Mount Airy, and less than that from the East Mount Airy blocks that back onto Stenton Avenue. The shop is at 6800 Ogontz Avenue. A chip fill is $60 to $130 and about half an hour. A fitted windshield is $250 to $450, an hour of work plus safe drive-away time before the urethane will hold. Side, quarter and rear glass is $200 to $500. Open 9 to 5 Monday to Saturday. Call 215-608-1108.

Mount Airy drives a lot of park road, and park roads are hard on glass. Lincoln Drive is the one everybody names: two lanes that bend through the trees along the Wissahickon with no shoulder to speak of, a surface that has been patched at every curve, and a canopy directly overhead that drops twigs, nuts and whole limbs onto whatever is underneath. Add Cresheim Valley Drive and the run down Wissahickon Avenue and you have a neighbourhood where a stone off somebody else's tyre arrives with nowhere to go but your windshield.
Parking is the gentler half of the story. Much of Mount Airy has driveways, and the stone twins on the west side often have a garage behind, so break-ins are less of the work here than they are three streets east. What we see instead is chips that were left too long. A car parked under trees, cooling all night and heated hard every morning, will turn a stable star into a running crack in a fortnight. The other Mount Airy job is the cars that came off the avenue: Germantown Avenue still has Belgian block and old rail set into it in stretches, and crossing that repeatedly does to a chipped screen exactly what you would expect.
Germantown Avenue runs the full length of the neighbourhood on the diagonal and is the dividing line between the two halves, with block paving and old track showing through in places. Lincoln Drive comes up from the Schuylkill through the park and gives West Mount Airy its edge, and Cresheim Valley Drive drops into the gorge at the Chestnut Hill end. On the east side, Stenton Avenue is the boundary with West Oak Lane and Cedarbrook, and Wadsworth Avenue and Vernon Road cross the grid between them. Washington Lane runs clean across everything, from the Wissahickon side over Germantown Avenue and Stenton Avenue and into West Oak Lane, which makes it the useful street for us. The residential blocks in between are stone twins on generous lots, kerbed and tree-lined, with cars on driveways rather than nose to tail.
“While driving on Lincoln drive something hit my driver window and my entire window broke into tiny pieces 😩 scariest thing ever! I went to this glass and mirror repair shop around 3;30-4pm. Told the owner my story. He got right on the phone to order my glass and told me he will call me tomorrow morning so I could drop my car off. Keeping his word , He called me 1st thing in the morning to drop my car off and told me it would be ready within the next hour. He called me an hour later to pick up my car! My window looks great as if nothing ever happened! Super fast and cheap! I have a 2015 kia Optima $190 to fix. I am very happy and will be sending folks his way! Black owed as well!!”
One, the park roads. Lincoln Drive and Cresheim Valley Drive throw grit constantly, there is no verge to catch anything, and the curves keep traffic close enough that a stone off the car in front lands squarely on your screen. Two, the canopy. Mount Airy has as much mature tree as anywhere in the city, and a storm branch or a full acorn drop lands on a parked car and takes out a rear or quarter light. Three, the block paving and old rail on Germantown Avenue, which flexes a chipped windshield every time you cross it and finishes off damage that would have sat still on smooth road. Four, temperature. Cars parked out under trees all night and defrosted hard at eight in the morning crack more glass around here than vandalism does.
Washington Lane is the simplest answer from either half of Mount Airy: pick it up on the Germantown Avenue side, cross Stenton Avenue, and stay on it until it meets Ogontz Avenue, then turn up Ogontz to 68th. From East Mount Airy, Stenton Avenue itself gets you most of the way, and any of the numbered avenues will take you across to Ogontz from there. From the Chestnut Hill end of the neighbourhood, run down Stenton Avenue and pick up Washington Lane. Ten minutes on a normal weekday, a little more when the schools are turning out. Ring ahead on 215-608-1108 and the glass will be waiting rather than the other way round.
Ogontz Glass & Mirror Co works across West Oak Lane and the surrounding towns — pick your neighborhood:
Side and rear glass is tempered, so it does not crack, it goes to pieces all at once, which is why it feels so much worse than it is. Cover the opening with plastic taped from the inside, drive it in if it is safe to drive, and leave the inside for us. Replacement is $200 to $500 fitted, the glass for common cars is usually here the same day, and cleaning the fragments out of the door channel and the seat runners is part of the price rather than an add-on.
A chip, yes. A crack, almost never worth it. The honest line is size and position: chips smaller than about a quarter, away from the edge and out of the driver's straight-ahead view, fill well for $60 to $130 and hold. Once the damage has legs, or it runs to the edge where the glass carries load, a fill leaves you with a visible scar and a screen that is still weak. That is a $250 to $450 replacement. Bring it in and you will get a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
About an hour of fitting, then a specific safe drive-away time on top, which depends on the adhesive and the weather on the day. You get told a real number before you hand the keys over, not a vague wait. Most Mount Airy customers drop the car in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon. We are open 9 to 5 Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday, so a Saturday job wants to start early rather than at four.
