Auto glass for Ogontz drivers

The Ogontz corridor is a working avenue and it treats cars like one. Two lanes each way in most stretches, buses stopping at every other block, delivery vans on the hazards outside the shops, and a permanent second row of cars double parked while somebody runs in for five minutes. Traffic squeezes past all of that with inches to spare, and the first casualty is almost always a mirror. We replace more mirror glass off this avenue than off anywhere else we serve, and a fair amount of quarter glass that got caught the same way.

Behind the avenue it changes character within half a block. The rows off Ogontz, and the streets running down toward Olney Avenue and up toward 72nd, are dense, narrow and parked solid, with cars out at the kerb overnight every night. That gives us the other half of the work: side windows gone before morning, and windshields that took a stone on the avenue itself and cracked out over the following winter. The advantage of living on the corridor is that none of it is a project. Ring, get a price, get told when the glass lands, and walk back down the avenue for the car when it is done. It is a glass and mirror shop in the old sense, so a cut mirror or a piece of flat glass is the same trip.

Ogontz Avenue runs from Broad Street at the Logan end all the way up to Cheltenham Avenue, where it stops at the county line, and every numbered avenue in this part of the city crosses it: 66th, 68th where we are, 70th, 72nd. Olney Avenue crosses down at the southern end near the high schools, and Chew Avenue runs parallel a few blocks west. It is a bus corridor with kerbside commercial the whole length, which means constant stopping, constant pulling out, and a road surface that has been trenched for utilities and patched so many times that the lane nearest the kerb is a patchwork rather than a surface. The side streets off it are narrow, one-way in stretches, and parked to capacity from the corner to the corner.

“While driving on Lincoln drive something hit my driver window and my entire window broke into tiny pieces 😩 scariest thing ever! I went to this glass and mirror repair shop around 3;30-4pm. Told the owner my story. He got right on the phone to order my glass and told me he will call me tomorrow morning so I could drop my car off. Keeping his word , He called me 1st thing in the morning to drop my car off and told me it would be ready within the next hour. He called me an hour later to pick up my car! My window looks great as if nothing ever happened! Super fast and cheap! I have a 2015 kia Optima $190 to fix. I am very happy and will be sending folks his way! Black owed as well!!”

Local Conditions

What cracks glass around Ogontz

Mirrors first, which makes this corridor unusual. Double parking, bus stops and delivery vans on an avenue this width means traffic passes with no clearance, and a folded mirror is a lucky escape rather than the normal outcome. Second, break-ins on the residential blocks either side, where cars sit at the kerb all night in the dark. Third, stone and grit off the avenue itself: patched kerbside lanes, heavy vehicles, and a lot of stop-start that keeps loose material moving. Fourth, chips that were left because the driving here is slow and nothing feels urgent, then run in the first hard freeze. Fifth, the school and college traffic around Olney Avenue, where tight kerb space and three-point turns account for a steady trickle of quarter lights.

Getting Started

Reaching us from Ogontz

You are on the road already. We are at 6800 Ogontz Avenue on the 68th Avenue corner, so from the Olney Avenue end just come up the avenue and watch the numbers climb; from the Cheltenham Avenue end come down it. From the Chew Avenue side, 66th, 68th or 72nd Avenue takes you straight across. From Broad Street, Olney Avenue west to Ogontz then up the avenue is the least complicated line. This is a working street rather than a lot, so the practical arrangement is that you hand the car over rather than park it and disappear. Tell us when you are coming on 215-608-1108 and we will be ready for it.

FAQ

Auto glass in Ogontz — questions, answered

A bus took my mirror off on Ogontz Avenue. Do you do mirror glass?

Yes, that is half the name over the door. If the housing survived and only the glass is broken, the glass itself is the cheap part and it is usually a quick job. If the whole assembly is hanging off, bring it in and we will tell you honestly whether it is a glass fix or something a body shop has to source. Either way you get the figure before anything happens. Mirror, side, quarter and back glass all sit in the $200 to $500 band depending on the car.

How does the ordering actually work?

You ring with the year, make and model, and the VIN if you have it to hand. If the glass is on the shelf, come in. If it is not, it gets ordered on that call, and you get told when it lands rather than being asked to sit and wait. Plenty of people drop the car after that call and get rung an hour later to come and collect it. Nothing gets started before the price is agreed, and the price does not move while the car is in the bay.

What time should I come on a Saturday?

Early. Saturday runs 9 to 5 like the rest of the week, but Sunday is closed, so anything that needs glass ordering wants to be a morning call rather than a four o'clock one. A chip fill at half past nine is done and paid for well before lunch. If the damage happened Saturday night, tape it up and ring at nine on Monday rather than driving around with a hole in the door.
