Wyncote is a driveway township, and that shapes what breaks. The stone and stucco houses on Greenwood, Bent Road and the lanes off Church Road came with room to park off the street, so cars here rarely sleep at a kerb and rarely get their windows put through. What they get instead is everything the trees can do to them. This is old, heavy canopy on properties that were laid out around it, and a car standing under it takes seed drop, sap, acorns in autumn and, two or three times a year, an actual limb.
The roads do the rest. Wyncote's lanes wind, dip and change camber, most of them with a stone verge or a wall instead of a kerb line, and there is no shoulder for loose material to collect on. So it sits in the traffic lane and gets flung by the car in front. Add the daily runs down to Cheltenham Avenue and the plaza on the county line, and a Wyncote windshield collects chips at a decent rate for a place with no highway in it. The good news is proximity: you are just over the line from us. Ring 215-608-1108 with the details, and most cars are dealt with the same day rather than booked for the following week.
Church Road and Greenwood Avenue carry most of the local traffic, with Bent Road and Rices Mill Road running through the middle and Washington Lane continuing south across Cheltenham Avenue into Philadelphia. Limekiln Pike is the other way over the line, dropping down into West Oak Lane a few blocks from us. Old York Road runs along the eastern side and takes the through traffic north toward Jenkintown. Cheltenham Avenue closes the bottom of the township with four lanes and the retail plaza at the Easton Road corner. The residential streets between are narrow, curved and heavily shaded, often without a proper kerb, and the Wyncote station on the regional line brings a daily crop of parked commuter cars standing in one spot from morning until evening.
“While driving on Lincoln drive something hit my driver window and my entire window broke into tiny pieces 😩 scariest thing ever! I went to this glass and mirror repair shop around 3;30-4pm. Told the owner my story. He got right on the phone to order my glass and told me he will call me tomorrow morning so I could drop my car off. Keeping his word , He called me 1st thing in the morning to drop my car off and told me it would be ready within the next hour. He called me an hour later to pick up my car! My window looks great as if nothing ever happened! Super fast and cheap! I have a 2015 kia Optima $190 to fix. I am very happy and will be sending folks his way! Black owed as well!!”
Trees, first and by a distance. Wyncote parks under mature canopy, and between storm limbs, autumn acorn drop and the sap that welds grit to the glass so the wipers grind it in, the trees do more damage to windshields here than any road does. Second, verge grit. Roads without kerbs keep their loose stone in the traffic lane, and on a bending road you are always close behind whoever is throwing it. Third, the runs down to Cheltenham Avenue and Old York Road, where four-lane traffic and retail turn-in mean stop-start behind trucks. Fourth, the commuter car parks at the station, which are the one realistic break-in exposure in a township where most cars are behind the house.
Two easy ways in. Washington Lane runs south out of Wyncote, crosses Cheltenham Avenue into the city, and meets Ogontz Avenue in West Oak Lane; turn there and we are at 68th Avenue. Or take Limekiln Pike down across Cheltenham Avenue, then cut across on 72nd or Washington Lane to Ogontz. From the Old York Road side, come across on Cheltenham Avenue and head west to Ogontz instead. Two and a half miles either way, ten minutes without traffic. If a windshield is going in, drop the car in the morning and plan on collecting it in the afternoon.
Ogontz Glass & Mirror Co works across West Oak Lane and the surrounding towns — pick your neighborhood:
A replacement, every time. A windshield is laminated, so a heavy impact leaves you with a spidered screen held together by the plastic interlayer, and no fill will restore either the view or the strength. It is $250 to $450 fitted depending on the car and what is built into the glass. Check the roof and the wiper arms while you are at it, because a branch that took out a screen has usually bent something else on its way down. Ring 215-608-1108 with the year, make and model.
Both work. A Wyncote driveway is good ground for mobile work, which is why we cover the township, but you are also only ten minutes away, and the shop is the better option for anything fiddly or anything happening in bad weather. Say where the car is parked when you ring and you will get a straight recommendation. A chip fill, honestly, is barely worth a van trip when the drive is this short.
Often not, for the size of job we do most. A $60 to $130 chip fill is well under most deductibles, and a $200 to $500 side window frequently is too. The figure you get from us is the whole figure, agreed before the work starts, so you can hold it up against your policy and decide. We will not tell you what to do with your insurance, but we will make sure the comparison you are making is with a real number rather than an estimate that moves.
