The mistake people make with a smashed door window is pressing the switch. The glass is clamped into a carrier on the regulator, and when the pane goes, the carrier is left at the bottom of the door surrounded by cubes. Running the motor with all of that in there drags debris through the mechanism and turns a straightforward glass job into a glass and regulator job. Leave the switch alone, tape something over the opening if rain is coming, and call. We take the door card off, peel the vapor barrier back without tearing it, empty the door, set the new pane square in the carrier and check the travel top to bottom before anything goes back together.
Back glass is a bigger piece of work than people expect. It is generally bonded to the body rather than clipped, so there is a cure time attached, and it carries printed circuitry: the defroster grid, usually the radio antenna, sometimes the high-level brake light. Those tabs have to be reattached correctly or you end up with a rear screen that clears in stripes and a radio that hisses. Both get tested before the car leaves. Just the glass, in almost every case. A body shop may quote a door because the skin is dented as well, but the pane, the seals and the regulator are separate items from the shell, and a window smashed by a break-in or a branch leaves the door itself perfectly good. The exception is when the frame around the glass is bent, because then the new pane will not seal or run true.
