The thing that costs money after a side window goes is water, not glass. A door is designed to have water inside it: rain runs down the inner face of the pane, past the seal, and out through drain holes along the bottom of the shell. That system copes with a controlled trickle. It does not cope with rain coming in through an open hole in the side of the car, which lands on the wrong side of the moisture barrier, soaks the back of the door card, wicks into the carpet and sits under the seat. On a car parked on a slope it gathers at the low end and stays there. A week of that costs more to put right than the pane did.
The replacement itself is straightforward and worth doing properly. The trim panel comes away first, the plastic moisture shield behind it is lifted off whole rather than shredded, tempered debris comes out from around the regulator, and the new glass is set into the carrier and cycled through its full travel before the trim goes back on. Alignment is the whole game: a pane sitting even slightly out will drag on the seal, let wind noise in and work loose over a season. Back glass is a different job again, usually bonded rather than clamped, carrying the defroster grid and often the antenna, so it gets both a cure time and an electrical check before the keys come back.
